After more than 30 years of rapid, extensive development, China's footwear industry has accumulated many contradictions and has entered a period of industrial transformation. For example, the footwear industry, which is mainly export-oriented, faces a shrinking international market, coupled with anti-dumping and other trade protection measures from major market countries, resulting in significant downward pressure on China's footwear industry. While large-scale enterprises emerge, a number of small enterprises are closing down.
Several years ago, due to factors such as rising labor costs, raw materials, and exchange rate fluctuations, many footwear companies transferred their production bases to Southeast Asia. With the full launch of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, the footwear industries in Vietnam, India, and Pakistan have developed rapidly. From January to November 2010, Vietnam's sports shoe output increased by 20.2% year-on-year, and the output value of large-scale leather shoe enterprises increased by 23.4% year-on-year, posing a significant potential threat to China's footwear industry.
Data shows that the strength of China's footwear enterprises remains considerable. After nearly 20 years of development, China's footwear industry, relying on a favorable investment environment and the advantages of labor resources, has established a complete upstream and downstream industrial chain, forming industrial clusters for various types of shoe production, establishing a complete market for finished footwear and footwear materials, as well as footwear R&D centers and information centers.
Although China's footwear industry is now also facing the impact of domestic policy factors and rising labor costs, as well as competition from India, Brazil, Vietnam, and Indonesia in the mid-to-low-end footwear sector, and competition from Italy, Spain, and Portugal in the high-end footwear sector, the overall competitive advantages of China's footwear industry remain unmatched by other countries.
